SUMMARY:
The Vice President of Development is responsible for providing leadership, strategy, planning, and guidance for the comprehensive fundraising efforts for The Carter Center. The VP oversees the leadership and professional development of more than 50 staff members whom, together with the technical offices, raise annual philanthropic revenue for The Carter Center. The Carter Center donor portfolio includes financial and in-kind resources from foreign governments, US Government agencies, foundations, corporations, and individuals. Reporting to the CEO and serving as a member of the senior leadership team, the VP will work to build synergies, collaboration, and culture across the organization. The VP is responsible for establishing and implementing relevant long- and short-term fundraising goals, and priorities, and building infrastructure in support of the strategic plan. The VP is responsible for increasing the visibility of The Carter Center to cultivate and build relationships, as well as driving broader awareness and donor support for the organization. The VP will build and manage a comprehensive full-scale development program, including institutional giving, individual giving, direct marketing and research, and a competitive bids unit. He/She manages the performance and team effectiveness of the development department. He/She fosters a work ethic deeply rooted in the principles of the organization’s founders and CEO’s visions which include innovation and a commitment to being the best at all times. The VP will lead the Center to accomplish current ambitious goals and embark on the next era of innovation and impact. The VP will be an energizing, respected professional with significant, relevant experience in development, executive leadership, and management.
This position is full-time and based in Atlanta, GA, USA. Due to the travel locations to country offices, Hostile Environment Awareness Training (HEAT) will be required.

- Develops strategy in coordination with external consultants to design a future-facing development strategy for The Carter Center.
- Works with senior leaders in the department to develop short and long-term fundraising goals, analyzing potential strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and constraints.
- Collaborates with programs to establish funding priorities. Evaluates the effectiveness of current strategies, course correcting as needed.
- Implements well-defined data strategy to support innovative fundraising efforts.
- Serves as an advisor for the teams managing the annual and semi-annual events for Carter Center Donors including Carter Center Weekend, Board of Councilors, Executive Briefing, and others.
- Encourages collaboration including appropriate use of tech solutions to cross over platforms between Direct Marketing, other development teams, Communications, and technical program areas.
- In collaboration with the CEO and Vice Presidents, directs the preparations and presentation of the Development Department's annual plan and budget.
- Oversees recruitment, performance management, development, and retention of professional and support staff in the development division; evaluates staff, develops a strong sense of teamwork, and establishes an environment of mentoring and support; coaches the team and brings strategic focus to the development department.
- Due to travel to international offices, Hostile Environment Awareness Training (HEAT) will be required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- A bachelor's degree in international development, management, business administration, or a related field.
- Ten years of progressively responsible experience, including development, fundraising, and leadership in a complex international organization or non-profit organization.
- Preferred qualifications include senior-level development experience, with proven expertise in cultivating, securing, and stewarding strong partnerships.
- Strong leadership, interpersonal, organizational, and problem-solving skills with attention to detail, the ability to navigate a complex work environment, and manage multiple priorities simultaneously. Knowledge of fundraising technology solutions.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Senior-level development experience, with proven expertise in cultivating, securing, and stewarding strong partnerships.
- Ability to work and communicate effectively in diverse multicultural settings.
- Ability to build and lead efficient, effective teams who support organizational and individual goals.
- Strong leadership, interpersonal, organizational, and problem-solving skills with attention to detail, the ability to navigate a complex work environment, and manage multiple priorities simultaneously.
- Knowledge of nonprofit governance and experience managing relationships with board members.
- Knowledge of fundraising technology solutions.
- Experience with individual and institutional giving, foundations, multi-lateral and bilateral government relations. Experience working with donors of all levels, high-level government officials, and diplomatic representatives
