The Security Advisor is the technical expert on safety and security management for country offices. Advising and assessing and strengthening, risk assessments, safety, security management plans, and standard office procedures for staff safety and security for approximately 20 country offices, staff working in the U.S. outside of Atlanta, and staff on international and domestic travel. Ensures that country offices have the knowledge, skills, and abilities to prepare, prevent, and respond to security and safety risks and situations that threaten the security of staff, capital assets, and proprietary information of the organization by providing strategic direction, tactical management, emergency planning, and disaster recovery strategies. This position also supports the crisis management team meetings and training and is a key advisor for crisis response overseas and the development of business continuity plans. The Security Advisor reports to the Vice President, Overseas Operations. In the absence of the VP, the Security Advisor represents the department and may advise senior leadership. This position is based in the Atlanta office and will travel to country offices regularly. Due to travel locations, Hostile Environment Awareness Training (HEAT) will be required.

- Key Responsibilities:
- Country Offices Operations: Establishes an intelligence network and assists the country offices to establish and maintain intelligence networks; responsible for designing country offices' security strategy, policies, and procedures in coordination with the Country Representative Leads development of guidelines for current and new country offices for internal investigations; preventing workplace violence; implementing and securing technological protection systems, proprietary information protection, and computer security; providing crisis management; maintaining health and safety of overseas and domestic program staff working in the states.
- Reviews protection systems capacity and recommends refining philosophy and design standards relating to protection systems (burglar, fire, and duress alarms and video coverage); re-defining procedures (international and domestic travel, special security threats, event security at various locations); examining organization security emergency response systems; reviewing building design (construction, modifications, walls, fences, and landscape) at country office locations; making recommendations for physical office and building security improvements at country office locations or events locations.
- Supports the crisis management team, including trainings and advising on business continuity plans.
- Provides information by reviewing, developing, and continually refining Overseas Operations security operations, manuals, policies, and procedures; briefing executives and managers on security-related issues.
- Travel Security Administration: Determines executive protection requirements by gathering and reviewing pre-planning travel intelligence information; issuing travel advisories; modify travel itineraries; making travel security arrangements, including guards, secure accommodations, and security-equipped transportation. Providing training as needed.
- Advisory: In close collaboration with the country offices, develops new security programs by strategically reviewing existing security programs; conducting comprehensive studies of present and anticipated threats; evaluating, analyzing, and continuously reviewing collection activity results on potential threats against the organization. Acts as a resource for Information Technology on information systems electronic threats and vulnerabilities, privacy issues, physical security, and operations continuity. Advises the country offices and domestic staff in the U.S. on the protection of organization assets, capital assets, and proprietary assets by providing consulting support; building consensus on the appropriateness and timeliness of physical and electronic monitoring improvements or enhancements; developing and implementing changes.
- Provides crisis management team guidance and training by providing state-of-the-art expertise; collecting, analyzing, and summarizing intelligence data and trends; developing cutting-edge strategies.
- Policies and Procedures: Responsible for advising on safety and security policies for current and new country offices, and domestic staff that are in compliance with all organizational policies and procedures.
- Recommends efficient procedures for the implementation of security activities for country offices.
- Professional Development: Maintains and encourages professional growth and development of self and country office staff by identifying educational/training programs, professional organizations, activities, and resources to maintain knowledge of national trends and to promote leading-edge expertise.
- Performs related responsibilities as needed.
- A bachelor's degree in security management, emergency management, international security studies, or related field and seven years in security, risk, disaster, or emergency management in public or private service areas with knowledge of security risk assessments, security planning, and critical incident/crises management, or equivalent combination of experience, education, and training. At least three years of experience coordinating operational safety and security in a range of environments and risk contexts, including international and domestic locations, is required.
- Strong understanding of NGO safety and security sector, trends, challenges, and legal frameworks.
- Knowledge of global international and security networks and resources.
- Ability to work and communicate effectively in diverse multi-cultural settings.
- Ability to identify threats, assess risk, and think creatively in response to situations.
