The Emory University Environmental, Health, and Safety Office (EHSO) is seeking a team member to serve in our Industrial Hygiene Unit. EHSO’s vision is a partnership with the Emory community that integrates sound environmental, health, and safety management practices in all aspects of Emory’s operations to enhance and support its world-renowned research, inquiry-driven teaching, and the delivery of premier healthcare.
The Environmental Professional II (EHS II) position serves as a staff specialist providing support to the Industrial Hygiene team with a focus on asbestos management as well as all other aspects of Industrial Hygiene. The successful candidate will possess a working knowledge of Asbestos Project Management, Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) standards, as well as other relevant codes and regulations.



  • Under general supervision, monitors, controls, inspects, contains or removes hazardous material (biological, chemical, radioactive or other).
  • Provides support to ensure compliance with applicable standards, laws and regulations.
  • Performs surveys and routine safety inspections in the areas of biosafety, chemical safety, radiation safety or industrial hygiene.
  • May participate in project management to facilitate laboratory moves and abatement projects, including coordination with vendors, contractors and internal clients.
  • Maintains storage areas, equipment, and personal protective equipment related to EHS programs.
  • Participates in training for program areas.
  • Responds to internal clients regarding chemical, biosafety, radiation safety and industrial hygiene concerns.
  • Maintains records and prepares reports.
  • Responds to emergency situations involving hazardous materials.
  • Performs related responsibilities as required.


  • Demonstrated ability to conduct effective quantitative and qualitative exposure risk assessments in a large academic environment which includes technically complex and diverse work processes, changes in operations, and sophisticated engineering and/or economic feasibility considerations in the control of hazards.
  • Provide technical services to facility project managers and departmental clients for the investigation and identification of asbestos, lead-based paint and other building related hazardous materials by conducting comprehensive hazardous materials surveys and related reports.
  • Manage remediation and abatement projects, including coordination with vendors, contractors, and internal clients.
  • Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing with diverse audiences; ability to explain technical concepts clearly and concisely.
  • Author scientific reports and communications to affected workers and management regarding workplace hazards, exposures, and health risks.
  • Ability to maintain current knowledge of and interpret specific government agency requirements (statutes, regulations, licenses, and permits) and university policies.
  • Working knowledge of the scientific and technical aspects of various regulatory requirements and potential impact on assigned work area(s).
  • Participate in educational meetings to instruct employees in matters pertaining to occupational health and prevention of incidents.


  • Bachelors plus 3 years experience in environmental engineering, public health, occupational health and safety or other appropriate science-related field of study (i.e. chemistry) is required.
  • Professional Board Certification desired: Examples include: CHMM (Certified Hazardous Materials Manager), PE (Professional Engineer), CIH (Certified Industrial Hygienist), Certified Health Physicist (CHP) or CSP (Certified Safety Professional), BSP (Biosafety Professional).
  • Equivalent combination of experience, education and training is accepted.

NOTE: Position tasks are generally required to be performed in-person at an Emory University location. Remote work from home day options may be granted at department discretion. Emory reserves the right to change remote work status with notice to employee.
