The Operations and Maintenance department within the Emory National Primate Research Center at Emory University is currently seeking a full-time HVAC Mechanic to join our team located in Atlanta, GA. The Emory Operation and Maintenance team maintains the safe operation and maintenance of building facilities which include electrical, mechanical, and plumbing systems. We are responsible for operating and maintaining specific equipment, preventive maintenance activities, responding to customer needs, and repairing equipment. We rapidly and appropriately respond to emergency events such as leaks, floods, power outages, or any other situation which could adversely affect humans, animals, and/or research at the Center. This can include responding quickly and appropriately to remote notification alarms including animal housing temperature, pressure, and humidity alarms, laboratory freezer alarms, and other space condition and equipment status alarms.

JOB DESCRIPTION:

  • Installs, maintains, and repairs HVAC systems, components, and equipment.
  • Rewires high voltage on HVAC equipment.
  • Routinely inspects systems and equipment.
  • Analyzes HVAC systems operations; pinpoints problems and repairs reciprocating chillers, heating systems, split units, steam systems, boilers, and related control systems/components.
  • Changes filters, lubricates bearings, replaces belts, checks seals, and maintains pneumatic and electrical controls.
  • Reads and interprets blueprints and schematic drawings to perform work assignments.
  • Operates hand tools, gantry, soldering, brazing, and test equipment used in HVAC.
  • Takes required precautions when working with hazardous chemical, materials, and power equipment.
  • Drives and maintains utility vehicles.
  • Performs related responsibilities as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A high school diploma or equivalent and four years of HVAC maintenance experience, OR completion of a formal HVAC training program and knowledge of HVAC systems.
  • Valid Georgia driver's license and insurable driving record.
  • All positions in this classification must have the ability to lift 50 pounds and to bend, stoop and twist.

PREFERRED/DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Detail oriented and strong technical skills.
  • Multi-functional experience within the plant is desired.
  • At least four years boiler experience including steam boilers & hot water boilers.
  • Must be able to respond to a variety of situations in difficult positions by the use of ladders, catwalks, crawl spaces, etc.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT:

  • Operates, maintains and services boilers and related equipment.
  • Operates valves and controls and other equipment to control the flow of air, gas, water and steam while maintaining temperatures and pressures at designated levels.
  • Samples, tests, analyzes, mixes and injects chemicals and performs blow-downs to maintain boiler waterside conditions.
  • Maintains daily operating logs to record conditions and unusual events.
  • Overhauls steam and hot water equipment including feed pumps, DA systems, heat exchangers, condensate pumps, traps, valves, and piping systems.
  • Works with campus building automation system (BAS) and equipment local controls to troubleshoot and optimize equipment and systems.
  • Responds to work orders assigned by the department supervisor.
  • Monitors boiler contractors as needed to ensure work is completed correctly.
  • Works in high containment areas when necessary. This involves getting the proper vaccinations, wearing personal protection equipment (PPE), and attending regularly scheduled training sessions.  High containment areas can include biosafety level 3 (BSL3) facilities, animal holding rooms, confined space, and others. 
  • Works closely with maintenance shop and assists when needed for other building system related tasks.
  • Voluntarily fills in as after-hours on call mechanic when conditions dictate. Performs 2-3 rounds per shift on buildings and major equipment when working as after-hours on call mechanic. 
  • Performs animal room preventive maintenance.
  • Maintains safe operation and preventative maintenance of on-site propane plant.

WORK SCHEDULE:

  • Monday – Friday, 7:30 am – 4:00 pm; weekends, holidays & after hours as needed.
