SUMMARY:

 

The Manager, Accounting and Finance manages the day-to-day financial operations of the core financial unit, including the Accounts Payable and Accounts Receivable functions. Assists with the preparation and production of monthly financial reporting process. Contributes to the annual budget process and the annual audit process. Performs routine and complex accounting activities of a technical nature requiring knowledge of systems, independent judgment, and ability to respond accordingly. Analyzes data and acts upon findings on a monthly, quarterly, and annual basis. Conceptualizes projects and follows through until completion. Supervises the work of others. This position reports to the Director, Finance and Controller.

 

FORMAL JOB DESCRIPTION:

  • Manages the daily operations of The Carter Center's core financial unit, including Accounts Payable and Accounts Receivable.
  • Compiles, documents, and monitors activity on accounts and cost centers.
  • Adjusts journal entries, balances accounts on a periodic basis, reconciles accounts and coordinates corrective actions, and informs management of account status.
  • Manages the monthly close process and assists in the monthly payroll processing.
  • The process includes financial report design, maintenance, and production as well as reconciliation of all major reports to ensure accuracy.
  • Coordinates recurring entries.
  • Manages development and dissemination of financial data on all aspects of operations; analyzes past and present financial records to prepare revenue and expense analyses and expense.
  • Summarizes periodic cash and short-term investment performance and makes recommendations to department management on appropriate levels of cash versus short-term investments.
  • Analyzes and reconciles planned giving investment accounts.
  • Prepares and manages annual departmental budgets by collecting and analyzing data, preparing forecasts based upon year-to-date data, and assisting department managers and directors in determining appropriate budget request levels for the coming year.
  • Directs the accounting, compliance, and reporting on all grant funding.
  • Reviews all grant provisions and sets up procedures to comply with the donor's needs and the organization's policies.
  • Evaluates grants for accurate assignment to revenue categories.
  • Reviews and revises budgets to equal the grant amount available.
  • Balances expenditures among multiple cost centers when funding for an initiative is provided by multiple grants, particularly grants with differing end dates.
  • Oversees compliance by ensuring accurate payroll allocations and review of all charges prior to payment.
  • Prepares various audit and tax schedules and facilitates collection of supporting documents.
  • Audits may include the Center's main financial statement audit, the US government A-133 audit, and grant-specific or project audits required by donors.
  • Manages the preparation of routine and ad hoc reports and graphs by determining the users' needs and by collecting, organizing, and analyzing the data to provide accurate and complete reports for management and regulatory agencies and to assist in making fact-based decisions to comply with regulations.
  • Assists in completion of special projects as directed by supervisors.
  • Recommends, develops, and evaluates policies and procedures for the Center's financial operations by analyzing current procedures and assessing efficiency and effectiveness of the procedures.
  • Assists in administering Financial Policies and Procedures Manual; provides guidance to staff in applying procedures.
  • Maintains professional growth and development of self by identifying educational/training programs, professional organizations, activities, and resources to maintain knowledge of national trends and to promote leading edge expertise.
  • Performs related responsibilities as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A bachelor's degree in accounting or related field, and four years of accounting experience with expanding levels of responsibility, OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Ability to analyze accounting and financial data in a timely and accurate manner and to monitor activity in compliance with generally accepted accounting principles.
  • Strong accounting skills.
  • Ability to detect and avoid errors.
  • Ability to perform duties in a professional, timely, and appropriate manner and in accordance with Carter Center policies and procedures.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong command of EXCEL and other Microsoft Office programs, and ability to learn and work effectively with the Carter Center's ERP system.

NOTE: This role will be granted the opportunity to work from home regularly but must be able to commute to The Carter Center on a flexible weekly schedule based upon business needs.  Schedule is based on agreed upon guidelines.  All non-exempt employees must reside within the state of Georgia. The Carter Center reserves the right to change remote work status with notice to employee.
