Reporting directly to the Director of the Office of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) Life, the Associate Director serves as a key member of the Office of LGBT Life within the broader context of Belonging and Community Justice (BCJ) area.
BCJ is comprised of six identity spaces at Emory that serve as a hub of support for students to matriculate to and through the university and includes the Asian Student Center; Centro Latinx; the Emory Black Student Union (EBSU); Emory First, which includes first-generation low- and limited-income student programs; the Center for Women at Emory; and the Office of LGBT Life. BCJ promotes dynamic and cohesive learning by creating space for individual, cultural, and communal development. BCJ's value of ensuring every student belongs and graduates is central to all programming, events, and initiatives within and across the respective identity spaces.
The mission of the Office of LGBT Life is to engage the university community in the creation of an affirming and just campus environment while supporting the development of students of all gender and sexual identities. The Office of LGBT Life is led by a Director and supported by an Associate Director and Assistant Director. The Office of LGBT Life also employees several undergraduate and graduate student staff.
This position is student-centered and responsible for supporting the Director's strategic vision and alignment of Emory resources to coordinate and assess community relevant programs and services to support access, academic progress, sense of belonging, persistence, and retention of students who find their place in the Office of LGBT Life.
Supports collaboration amongst other identity spaces within BCJ (Asian Student Center; Centro Latinx; Center for Women at Emory, Emory First; and Emory Black Student Union) as well as colleagues across Emory Campus Life, Provost areas, and the university as a whole to develop intentional planning and implementation of programs and resources focused on students' salient and non-salient identities and intersectionality while also promoting a university culture of inclusion where students from all identities can thrive.
Responsible for program development and implementation, student development, and collaboration with students. Focuses on supporting students and their personal and professional development. Actively engages in student advising and forges strong partnerships across campus to enhance the services available to LGBTQ students and the broader student body.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Student Support & Supervision
- Develops and provides resources to all lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and/or queer (LGBTQ) undergraduate, graduate, and professional students.
- Serves as an advisor for student organizations supporting LGBTQ students.
- Collaborates with student organizations and campus partners leading high impact practices for LGBTQ students.
- Refers LGBTQ students to appropriate campus resources for support, as needed (e.g. Student Health Services, Counseling and Psychological Services, Office of Undergraduate Education, Office of the Registrar, etc).
- Meets one-on-one with all students who request assistance in collaboration with Office of LGBT Life professional staff.
- Creates reflective spaces for LGBTQ students to celebrate their queer and trans identities.
- Supervises, leads, mentors, and designs professional development opportunities for Office of LGBT Life professional and student staff. Supervision of staff may include the following groups: undergraduate student staff, graduate student staff, and/or assistant director(s).
- Responds and supports leadership in crisis situations in accordance with university policies and protocols.
Emory and Campus Life Program Development
- Develops, coordinates, and executes comprehensive and consistent Office of LGBT Life programs and services designed to support Emory's Student Flourishing Initiative with an additional focus on programs and services related to graduate students and including the Annual Pride Awards, Trans Awareness Week, and International Trans Day of Visibility.
- Creates outcome-based innovative transformative programs that invite all students to communicate across social identities.
- Coordinates efforts to welcome LGBTQ students to Emory, including those transitioning from the Oxford Campus.
- Leads the planning and implementation efforts to celebrate all queer and trans students during LGBTQ History Month.
- Designs assessment tools to gather quantitative and qualitative program data and trends within an Office of LGBT Life assessment calendar.
- Creates and presents educational engagement opportunities for students in collaboration with the Director of the Office of LGBT Life.
- Develops and collaborates with the Director on LGBTQ-focused presentations, conferences, retreats, and workshops, including updates to the Safe Space Program and a Queer Community Group leader training curriculum.
- Cultivates and strengthens relationships with colleagues across the university including alumni.
- Benchmarks with peer institutions, applies relevant developmental theory, and incorporates current student needs.
- Supports Emory, Campus Life, and the other BCJ areas via committee work, projects, and initiatives that serve the campus broadly, such as:
- Dean of Students portfolio retreats
- Strategic planning committees
- Assessment committees
- Pre-Orientation and Orientation planning meetings
- Large-scale community and university-wide programs
- Other duties as assigned by supervisor or their delegate
Communication & Marketing
- Leads office newsletters content creation and implementation that is in alignment with Office of LGBT Life, BCJ, Campus Life, and Emory University guidelines.
- Maintains accuracy and effectiveness of the Office of LGBT Life website.
- Manages the Office of LGBT Life listserv and inbox and ensures timely and appropriate responses to all students, faculty, staff, and community partners.
- Markets and promotes the Office of LGBT Life, Belonging & Community Justice, and their programming to all students to increase participation.
Fiscal and Center Operations
- Provides timely/pertinent budgetary information to supervisor as necessary throughout the year.
- Processes university fiscal paperwork promptly and accurately.
- Routinely assesses the necessity of various expenditures, including but not limited to programming activities, student recognition, and professional development/training.
- Meets deadlines for all requests for reports, data, publications, and budgets.
- Ensures the responsible planning and expenditure of fiscal resources in a manner consistent with good fiduciary responsibility.
- Oversees the cleanliness and organization of the Office of LGBT Life & BCJ as a whole, ensuring that all areas are tidy, well-maintained, and adhere to health and safety standards.
- Oversees the management of the Office of LGBT Life space and space reservations.
- Regularly inspects the facilities to identify any maintenance, safety, or operational issues, ensuring that the environment is safe and functional.
- Supports the Director with fund-raising efforts in the Office of LGBT Life.
- Performs other related duties as required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- A master's degree in higher education, student affairs, counseling, or a related field and three years of experience with campus-wide programming supporting LGBTQ college students, OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
- Demonstrated experience in supervising and developing student staff including graduate assistants.
- Demonstrated experience in event management and/or student-centered programming with an emphasis on assessment of programmatic outcomes. Experience advising student organizations.
- Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment.
- Demonstrated understanding and experience with complex issues around identity and equity; intercultural communication and competence; and cultural humility
- Experience educating and training students on topics of diversity, inclusion, and difference.
- Knowledge of student development theory and understanding current issues, best practices, and higher education trends related the challenges facing students and staff from historically underrepresented communities such as people with disabilities, people of color, queer, transgender, gender diverse, first-generation, low-income, international, immigrant, undocumented, tribal, and indigenous communities.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Four years of experience with campus-wide programming and supporting LGBTQ college students
- Leadership experience in program development, diversity programming/education
- Demonstrated experience with providing high-impact and culturally engaging educational programs
- Desire to participate in alumni engagement, fundraising and/or donor relations
- Experience designing learning outcomes and assessment metrics to support programmatic endeavors
- Understanding of the legal aspects of higher education
- Connected, engaged, and contributor to student affairs professional associations and the field
- Broad knowledge and understanding of university policies, procedures, and culture
