Description

JOB DESCRIPTION: 

  • Works with delegated authority to lead Biolocity at Emory University and Georgia Institute of Technology.
  • Leads a team to enable and enhance the development of research projects in medical science that can be translated from the laboratory to the private sector in order to maximize patient benefit.
  • Leverages new and existing relationships, evaluates new technologies and assesses new business opportunities while developing relationships with outside investors and industry to sustain the program's funding.
  • Coaches and mentors academic faculty on the requirements and realities involving the commercialization of medical technology.
  • Supervises the Biolocity staff and daily actives of Biolocity as a whole.
  • Leads engineering and clinical faculty to develop research grant applications that are translational in nature and that can result in new or improved medical products; presents recommendations and findings to the Oversight Committee (OC)
  • Works with the project faculty, Chair and OC to ensure the attainment of project goals and critical milestones toward financing and commercialization of products.
  • Acts as a primary conduit for the connection to internal and external commercialization resources that can ensure the success of each project.
  • Works to secure additional philanthropic or other funds to sustain the long-term success of the Biolocity program.
  • Prepares quarterly progress reports, presentations to the philanthropic supporters of Biolocity and other reporting requirements as need.
  • Meets with the University Presidents or their designees, Deans of Engineering and Medicine, and members of the Oversight Committee to give program updates.
  • Writes and edits communication material (print and web) that provides information to potential investigators (applicants) and corporate/foundation partners.
  • Writes and edits communication material such as annual reports and status updates to inform the sponsors and external advisory board members of progress in meeting the overall goals of Biolocity.
  • Represents Emory University, Georgia Institute of Technology and Biolocity at local, national, and international Biotech events and conferences.
    Acts as Business and Funding coach for area start-up companies and angel investors.
  • Contributes to industry planning activities such as the annual Coulter Investment Forum.
  • Designs and plans training seminars for faculty to educate them on commercialization of biomedical technology.
  • Collaborates with staff from the Engineering and Medicine Advancement offices to plan and implement fundraising events to help increase awareness and philanthropic support of Biolocity.
  • Works with grant managers in departments that receive awards to create new budgets.
  • Educates investigators and department fiscal/grants staff about reporting requirements and answers questions related to awards and allowable costs.
  • Prepares financial reports and projections for the Chair/PI, Federal Funders, and Foundations.
  • Authorizes expenditures on investigator projects (sub-budgets) per established criteria.
  • Purchases goods and services for program operations. Reviews and monitors expenditures on administrative and investigators’ project budgets.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree and 7 years work experience in medical, biotech or pharmaceutical industry.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Degree in scientific field (preferably life sciences) and work experience in the private sector for life science companies or consulting firms that serve the industry medical, biotech or pharmaceutical industry. (5 years minimum)
  • Work with the following experience: Demonstrated ability to manage and promote complex business and scientific projects successfully, five years complex program management experience, and/or fund-raising experience.

NOTE: Position tasks are generally required to be performed in-person at an Emory University location.  Remote work from home day options may be granted at department discretion. Emory reserves the right to change remote work status with notice to employee.
