SUMMARY:

The Epidemiologist provides technical expertise for monitoring and evaluating River Blindness, Lymphatic Filariasis, Schistosomiasis, and Malaria elimination and control activities. The Epidemiologist maintains direct communication with and travels to program countries to support activities, meetings, and program oversight. This position is Atlanta-based with international and domestic travel required approximately 25% of the time. The Epidemiologist will report to the Senior Associate Director for Research of the River Blindness, Lymphatic Filariasis, Schistosomiasis and Malaria Programs. Due to the travel locations, Hostile Environment Awareness Training (HEAT) will be required.

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provides technical and scientific expertise for programs in the areas of communicable disease, chronic disease and environmental epidemiology.
  • Designs, conducts and reports on the epidemiological study of diseases, collects and analyzes data and develops health education materials.
  • Manages and participates in investigations and surveys that have national and international impact.
  • Conducts program research and prepares operational and statistical reports.
  • May write publishable articles and papers.
  • Serves as a liaison to and works with other groups and organizations participating in related programs.
  • May travel internationally to supervise field operations.
  • Performs related responsibilities as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A doctoral degree in a field related to area of research or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
  • Ability to travel internationally is required.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A doctoral degree (PhD, MD, DVM) in epidemiology, biostatistics, biology, medicine or a related public health field.
  • Experience designing surveys and experience in program monitoring, research and/or implementation for neglected tropical diseases (NTDs), malaria or vector-borne disease.
  • At least five years of experience, including international work.
  • Strong quantitative skills (Excel) and proficiency in statistical software (Stata, R, and/or SAS) and geospatial mapping skills (ArcGIS or QGIS).
  • Strong written and oral communication skills, with demonstrated record of scientific publication.
  • French, Portuguese and/or Spanish language skills.

NOTE: This role will be granted the opportunity to work from home regularly but must be able to commute to The Carter Center on a flexible weekly schedule based upon business needs.  Schedule is based on agreed upon guidelines.  All non-exempt employees must reside within the state of Georgia.
