Description

The Director for Business & Finance for the School of Medicine (SOM) leads and coordinates the All Funds business and financial reporting for the SOM and key components of Woodruff Health Science Center, ensuring compliance with university and external regulations. This role includes managing fund accounting, preparing financial statements, and collaborating with academic and administrative departments to support budgeting, projections/forecasts, and fiscal planning.

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  • Drives financial results through collaborating and leading the departments through accurate standardized reporting to meet strategic goals.
  • Coordinates with the controller's team to ensure the integrity of financial data and reporting processes, and provides leadership in implementing best practices for financial management.
  • Provides recommendations for strategy, vision, and direction by continuously analyzing existing systems and processes, identifying needs for new systems, and developing proposals for improvements.
  • Instills a culture of continuous improvement and effectively adapts to dynamic environments by conceptualizing and driving critical initiatives and identifying enhancement opportunities.
  • Collaborates in major process redesign and innovation projects as a business owner, developing and implementing critical initiatives.
  • Serves as a key technical resource for the Dean's Office, department chairs, administrators, and the finance group; provides coaching, training, and mentoring; and ensures succession planning.
  • Creates and reviews financial reporting and dashboards for the School of Medicine and primary departments within the Woodruff Health Science Center.
  • Reports to the CFO of the School of Medicine and manages complex accounting and control functions, including financial reporting and automated systems development.
  • Manages the development and maintenance of effective information systems by identifying user needs and ensuring operations are accurate, complete, and efficient.
  • Develops system and procedure requirements to support organizational reporting; assists in preparing financial statements for internal and external surveys in compliance with official guidelines.
  • Assists in planning, directing, and monitoring budgeting, projections/forecasts, and financial reporting for assigned areas to ensure responsible stewardship of resources. 
  • Reviews accounting data to ensure accuracy. Identifies and resolves problems and ensures corrections are made to meet deadlines.
  • Evaluates computer/software needs, suggests system modifications, and determines resource availability.
  • Reviews the preparation of financial statements, reviewing and analyzing them to ensure accuracy and consistency.
  • Prepares interim and annual financial results and designs frameworks for timely, accurate reporting.
  • Serves as a key technical resource on financial matters for the Dean's Office, department chairs, and administrators, providing guidance as needed.
  • Drives continuous critical analysis of existing systems and processes, identifying opportunities for new systems.
  • Produces or reviews ad hoc financial reports and analyses to support decision-making.
  • Performs related responsibilities as required.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field and 10 years of related financial experience, including management experience.
  • A CPA, MBA, or CFA is preferred.
  • Fund accounting and financial reporting knowledge and experience are desirable.
  • An understanding of emerging technologies and their application to university information systems and experience in auditing and internal controls are desirable.
  • Ability to provide innovative leadership in a dynamic environment and to work collaboratively with multiple constituents.
  • Knowledge of and ability to apply, interpret, and implement GAAP.
  • Knowledge and understanding of accounting systems.
  • Advanced analytical skills to review and analyze complex financial information.
  • Attention to detail and problem-solving ability.
  • Strong leadership and management skills.

 

NOTE: This role will be granted the opportunity to work from home regularly but must be able to commute to Emory University on a flexible weekly schedule based upon business needs.  Schedule is based on agreed upon guidelines of department. This role requires residency in the state of GA. Emory reserves the right to change remote work status with notice to employee.
