    Emory University is a leading research university with over $628 million in extramural research funding in 2017. The Laney Graduate School enrolls approximately 2000 students in close to 50 doctoral and master’s degree programs with faculty members from the College of Arts and Sciences and the professional schools of Medicine, Nursing, Public Health, Theology, Business and Law. The Laney Graduate School recruits students internationally, and has research and program collaborations with Georgia Institute of Technology, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and other institutions. Overall, Emory ranks as the second largest employer in Georgia with over 31,000 employees, including 3,000 faculty members, and a total student enrollment of approximately 15,200. Emory University is positioned along the Clifton Corridor, which also includes the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.


    The Assistant/Associate Dean is responsible for directing a range of activities that address student professional development programs and career planning. Supervises staff in the professional development and career planning areas. Works closely with the LGS Assistant Dean for Student Affairs and the Assistant Dean for Community, Diversity and Inclusion/Chief Diversity Officer. This position reports to the Vice Provost and Dean of the Laney Graduate School.


    The individual selected will lead and implement programming designed to support the academic, social and cultural needs of students during specific transitions throughout their graduate careers and into career pathways. These transitions are marked by academic activity defining doctoral programs by coursework and teaching, examinations and prospectus preparation, dissertation writing, and job search. Programs include contemporary and innovative initiatives that advance student professional development and career planning for masters and doctoral students in programs across the Humanities, Social Sciences, and Natural Sciences. Serves as a liaison for connecting students to broader University programs, external partnerships, and resources related to professional development and career planning. Responsible for maximizing collaborations with other university offices and using resources in place in other campus units that address professional development and career planning.


    Lead efforts to enhance career development for graduate students and has responsibility for engaging actively in the development, implementation, and funding, including extramural funding, of new initiatives to promote career readiness. Work closely with graduate program directors, program administrators, and University offices with missions that align with student career development and workforce preparations, like the University Career Center, the Center for Faculty Development and Excellence and career planning offices in other academic units, as well as student-led organizations on campus. Must take initiative to serve as program lead and/or primary investigator for career development grants aimed at teaching graduate students career and professional skills, enhancing their collaborative research experience and making them optimally career ready. 


    Serves as primary liaison to faculty, in general, and Program Directors and Directors of Graduate Studies for support and guidance for program improvement and curriculum change for graduate student professional development and career planning.




    PhD or equivalent/parallel degree required. Five years of experience in graduate education and/or design and implementation of initiative and programming for graduate student career planning and professional development. Prior administrative, teaching or experience in academic program design and implementation required. Engagement with professional development of graduate students and a demonstrated ability to build effective relationships with a diverse student population, faculty, staff, and the public also required. Established record of professional development grants preferred. Familiarity with data analysis and reporting.
