  • Description

    Reporting to the Senior Associate Vice President for Advancement Programs, develops and implements strategies for identifying, cultivating, and successfully soliciting individuals, corporations, and foundations for major gifts to support educational and research programs.


    • Responsible for leading the regional advancement team, deans and academic administrators, and other faculty to generate private gifts to support the program(s).
    • Must also be able to function as an integral part of a team, which designs and implements successful fundraising programs that include annual giving, planned giving, and major gifts to maximize private gift support.
    • Identifies potential sources of private gift support and recommend appropriate strategies and programs to generate major gifts to support the educational and/or research activities.
    • Plans and implements programs that informs and cultivates individuals, corporations and foundations with the capability of making gifts to support the institution; works with other members of the division to assure that potential gift prospects are properly researched and assigned, coordinated and completed, and donors receive appropriate acknowledgments and recognition.
    • Provide staff assistance to regional development officers in the identification and solicitation of major gift prospects; coordinates and oversees the production of appropriate fundraising materials including, but not limited to, case statements, brochures, solicitation letters, gift proposals, appreciation letters, donor reports, campaign status reports, etc.; prepares budgets for fundraising projects, allocates costs to the appropriate unit(s), obtains necessary administrative approvals, and provides periodic progress reports to appropriate offices; determines assessment and cultivation visits to major gift prospects.
    • Performs related duties as assigned. 



    A bachelor's degree and seven years of successful fundraising or related experience, preferably in raising major gifts; preferably in an academic environment; and demonstrated success in designing, implementing, and administering programs related to fundraising, volunteer management, marketing or related fields.

    Ability to travel throughout designated regions as needed.

    Preferred history of working effectively with academic leaders in all aspects of fundraising; Proven success in building productive, long-term relationships with senior university administrators, faculty, staff, volunteers and boards; and a track record of success in individual gift fundraising.




    • Maintain a portfolio of select major gift prospects with capacity of $100K+
    • Facilitate relationships between deans, faculty, and staff and prospects and volunteers. Arrange fundraising calls for University leadership, including the provost, deans and accompany them on the calls.
    • Manage regional fundraising efforts to include identifying new prospective major gift donors, and developing long-range plans for their involvement in the University.
    • Provide assistance with major gift prospects assigned to other advancement and alumni engagement staff as requested and serve as a resource for the division.



    • Provide direct supervision for Regional Advancement Directors (RADs); conduct monthly assessment and review meetings; and conduct formal mid-year and annual evaluations.
    • Provide intentional leadership and support for regionally based staff.
    • Mentor members of the regional advancement team. Consult with regional advancement directors on prospect strategy development and implementation.
    • Recruit and hire new RADs and evaluate regional placement and assignments.
    • Develop a training program for new Regional Advancement Directors that includes both fundraising protocols and advancement culture.
    • Report on gift officer activity and fundraising status to the Senior Associate Vice President for Advancement Programs and provide a quarterly report to school and unit partners.


    Program Development:

    • Assist administrators and faculty in the identification and prioritization of institutional and departmental funding needs; keep abreast of institutional priorities, programs, and events for use in advancement efforts.
    • Foster and maintain productive relationships with colleagues. Coordinate program and prospect strategies with other Advancement and Alumni Engagement programs (Principal Gifts, Constituent Giving, Gift Planning, Corporate Relations and Foundation Relations and Alumni Engagement), as well as other internal partners such as prospect research, prospect management, and strategic communications.


    Infrastructure Development and Support:

    • Assist with the development of technologically sophisticated portfolio and prospect staging tools so that RADs can prioritize and monitor their work with prospects and donors.
    • Develop and implement plans to introduce a major gift discovery program based on results of a comprehensive data mining and wealth screening project conducted by research.
    • With the SAVP of Advancement Programs and the SAVP of Strategic Communications, explore the creation of a leadership giving team of fundraisers charged with high end constituent giving asks and qualification and referral of new major gift prospects.


    Campaign Preparation:

    • Develop and implement plans for RADs deployment during a campaign and/or other special initiatives.
    • Provide staff support to regional campaign leadership and regional volunteer leaders.
    • Participate with colleagues in Advancement and Alumni Engagement on campaign preparation.
