The Ghalei lab in the Department of Biochemistry at Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta, GA is looking for a Research Specialist. Research in the Ghalei lab focuses on the critical role of a class of evolutionarily conserved non-coding RNAs that regulate gene expression and the cellular translational program by affecting the processing and modification of the ribosomal RNAs.   • Under general supervision, performs a variety of defined research and laboratory tests and experiments according to prescribed protocols and assigned schedules.
  • Sets up experiments as prescribed by a principal investigator.
  • May be required to participate in laboratory maintenance activities such as sterilization and cleaning of equipment, ordering of supplies, inventory and media preparation.
  • Maintains records, files and logs of work performed in laboratory notebooks and computer databases and records results of studies for publications, grants and seminar presentations.
  • Employees in this classification may be required to work with, take specific precautions against and/or be immunized against potentially hazardous agents.
  • Performs related responsibilities as required by principal investigator.
  • Will provide lab management support by ordering and restocking lab supplies and reagents and maintaining equipment.
  • Will support the ongoing research projects in the lab as needed and maintains accurate notes of experiments and procedures.
  • Will have the opportunity to perform an independent project under the supervision of senior researchers in the lab.
  • Will actively participate in weekly laboratory meetings and present data on a regular basis.



  • Bachelor's degree in a scientific field OR equivalent combination of experience, education, and training.


  • Recently completed their undergraduate studies in biomedical sciences and interested in obtaining additional experience before attending graduate school.
  • Relevant previous laboratory research experience including hands-on experience with DNA, RNA and protein preparations.
  • Interest in learning new techniques in the area of RNA and protein biochemistry.
  • Excellent time management and communication skills.
  • Organized, self-motivated, efficient and intellectually curious.
  • Ability to engage effectively with students, faculty and staff of diverse backgrounds.
  • Strong commitment to support diversity, equity and inclusion.

NOTE: Position tasks are generally required to be performed in-person at an Emory University location. Remote work from home day options may be granted at department discretion. Emory reserves the right to change remote work status with notice to employee.
