Designs, manages, and upgrades databases for Emory Enterprise-wide services. Serves as a technical resource for applications owners to explain and resolve technical issues and create efficiencies. Analyzes, researches and recommends database solutions for enterprise-wide customers and applications. Provides database expertise to address issues and recommend solutions. Evaluates database performance to optimize service levels. Performs rotating on-call duties to support enterprise-wide applications. Interacts with IT management and applications owners to explain technical issues, features, requirements and database systems components.
The Cloud Database Engineer will manage several existing databases and partner with development teams to implement AWS cloud database migration strategy for moving on premises COTS and in house-built applications. Define, develop, and implement automated and repeatable processes to meet cloud data requirements, including those for availability, reliability, confidentiality, integrity, performance, scalability, auditing, and security using AWS tools and processes. Development as well as operations including database builds, configuration, migrations, backup, recovery, performance tuning, data security by collaborating with other IT teams such as Cloud Engineering, Research Solutions, Enterprise Applications, Systems administration, Storage, and Security. Provide routine maintenance, monitoring, performance tuning, troubleshooting and problem resolution for production and non-production databases, including security and software updates. Production operations responsibilities as part of a team for maintaining 24/7 coverage. Ongoing automation and enhancements of the database platforms. Upgrade current databases to newer versions in alignment with vendor roadmaps. Work closely with application teams as a trusted advisor showcasing customer centricity and service management. Collaborate and offer leadership in chartering new technologies and develop pilot projects.
Strong expertise in leading the design and operation of multiple database hosting platforms. Must have hands-on experience in the following databases - PostgreSQL, MySQL, AWS DB Hosting (RDS). Oracle, SQL Server, MongoDB experience is nice to have but not required. Expertise in at least three of the following - Ansible, Jenkins, Git, Python, CloudFormation. Experience successfully working as part of a cross-functional agile development team, interacting effectively with developers, systems engineers, data engineers, system stakeholders, and the customer. Understanding of emerging IT trends. Actively follows new cloud data architecture patterns and tooling options. Experience defining, developing and implementing automated and repeatable cloud automation processes for databases (monitoring/alerting, backup, recovery, high availability, upgrades, etc.) using AWS and other standard automation tools, such as CloudFormation and Ansible. Working knowledge of DevOps, automation and metrics driven continuous process improvement. Experience working within an IT Service methodology/framework, such as ITIL and knowledge of ServiceNow.
Familiarity with principles and practices of Change Management, Configuration Management, Project Management, and Systems Development Lifecycle. Experience designing and managing services that protect sensitive data, such as data that is regulated by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), Family Education Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), Federal Information Security Management Act (FISMA), and Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS). Expertise in solving problems under ambiguous situations. Must be able to process both abstract and concrete information, consider alternatives, and think outside the box. Form collaborative partnerships grounded in trust and integrity with customers, peers, stakeholders, and leadership. Self-starter, team player, highly motivated individual with excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
