Description

Research in the Hecker laboratory is broadly focused on lung injury-repair responses related to fibrotic and acute lung injury in the following areas: (1) understanding how normal physiologic repair responses “go awry” in aging, (2) how this contributes to the pathogenesis of age-dependent lung diseases, and (3) the development of novel treatments that target age-associated pathological mechanisms to ultimately promote repair. The ideal candidate is a highly motivated individual that wants to join a team-oriented lab carrying out research in these areas.
Prior experience with cellular/molecular biology and biochemical assay techniques will be needed. The ideal candidate will help to intellectually and technically drive projects, can troubleshoot effectively, and can work independently with minimal supervision and as part of the team.

 

 

JOB DESCRIPTION:

  • Independently performs a wide range of highly technical and complex research and laboratory tests and procedures.
  • Devises highly specialized research procedures by applying a knowledge of advanced research techniques and equipment.
  • Provides input to protocol development.
  • Serves as a technical resource for other research personnel.
  • Analyzes and interprets the results of studies.
  • Investigates and recommends alternative approaches to improve the quality of results.
  • Trains research staff in specialized procedures and theoretical concepts for unique tests.
  • Recommends new equipment and supplies needed for specialized procedures.
  • Provides input into the development of departmental goals and objectives.
  • May assist in grant and other funding application preparation.
  • Review literature for related research developments and techniques.
  • Prepares written materials, charts and graphs on specialized techniques and research results for publication or presentation.
  • Oversees quality assurance of research performed by others.
  • Monitors the handling, storage and disposal of hazardous substances.
  • Performs related responsibilities as required.
  • Employees in this classification may be required to work with, take specific precautions against and/or be immunized against potentially hazardous agents.
  • Animal management (breeding, genotyping, drug treatment etc.) and compliance.
  • Animal surgery pre operation, and post operation management.
  •  Assist with writing IACUC, Biosafety and other approval documents.
  • Conduct research in molecular, cellular, and/or biochemical experimental biology including: PCR, protein analyses (western blotting, protein purification), cell culture, ELISA and genetic manipulation of cell lines to modify endogenous proteins or introduce modified proteins.
  • Perform cell-based assays for oxidative stress, cell viability, and cell senescence.
  • Prepare technical reports and recommendations based upon research outcomes
  • Intellectually and technically drive research efforts by developing, optimizing and executing cellular, biochemical, immunological, and molecular assays to meet project objectives.
  • Troubleshoot protocols, adapt new protocols and probe the scientific literature to identify new assays as needed.
  • Assist with supervising undergraduate students in the lab.
  •  Maintain detailed records of studies conducted, organize data and prepare data for manuscript
    submissions.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree in a scientific field and four years of research experience, OR equivalent combination of experience, education, and training.

NOTE: Position tasks are required to be performed in-person at an Emory University location; working remote is not an option. Emory reserves the right to change this status with notice to employee.
