The Assistant Director for the NIH-funded R-25 Research Education: Initiative to Maximize Student Development (IMSD) will assist the faculty Program Director in managing all facets of the grant directives, which are intended to increase the diversity of the scientific workforce. Our goal is to nurture all students to become competitive applicants to, and successful graduates from, high-caliber Ph.D. programs in the biomedical and behavioral sciences. The Assistant Director reports to the leadership team within IMSD and stakeholders both in the Laney Graduate School and Emory College. This individual will work with the Director in planning all operational facets of the IMSD program and its related activities which include, but are not limited to the following.



  • Direct the student development program for a diverse cohort of trainees in STEM disciplines - undergraduate and graduate students, to focus on increasing admission and the completion of the Ph.D. degree. 
  • Advising, counseling and mentoring program students is a major focus of this position. May teach at the undergraduate level;
  • Design and execute interventions to foster student success
  • Approve bi-weekly timesheets
  • Check in with students who are below or above weekly research requirements
  • Read and edit student materials for grad school/conferences/summer programs
  • Budget travel expenses with students
  • Assist students with locating research group to join
  • Approve and put OUE accommodations in place for students
  • Host (undergrad) or assist with planning of (grad) new student orientation
  • Plan and develop curricula furthering long-term goals of the program;
  • Serve as Lead Instructor for the Professional Development Seminar required course;
  • Develop and participate in training graduate and undergraduate student workshops, journal clubs, and social activities;
  • Plan recruitment symposia and develop events for student presentation of research
  • Organize and lead meetings



  • Assists in directing the strategic planning, development, and implementation of programs.
  • Represents the organization at meetings, conferences, and other events.
  • May develop and present speeches or presentations to generate or enhance awareness of program(s)
  • Provides technical support by evaluating established processes, conducting training, attending operational meetings, and networking with affiliated groups
  • Monitors progress toward achieving established objectives and deadlines
  • Participates in planning, administering, and monitoring program related budgets
  • Conducts research, designs new initiatives, and collaborates with others to ensure program(s) remain viable
  • May serve on, hold office in, or chair committees
  • May write publishable articles and papers
  • May supervise staff
  • Supervise or assists in developing operational and statistical reports for management and regulatory agencies.
  • Ensures required records and documentation are maintained.
  • Performs related responsibilities as required



  • Bachelor's degree in a field related to the program(s) and five years of program related experience, OR equivalent combination of experience, education, and training.


  • Ph.D. in a biomedical, medical, biological, behavioral or natural science with 1-year experience in program planning; or Masters degree in biology, chemistry, or biomedical sciences and 5 years of experience teaching underrepresented students; or an equivalent combination of experience, education, and training
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to work with a diverse constituent group including faculty, administrators, staff, and students
  • Excellent management skills, and extreme attention to detail
  • Ability to use good judgment, maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive issues with tact and diplomacy
  • Ability and willingness to work non-traditional work hours as needed to meet deadlines
  • Desire to teach at the undergraduate level;Significant experience working in the area of diversity, equity, and inclusion in a complex institutional environment preferred 


This is a GRANT FUNDED POSITION. This position is scheduled to run for five years from August 31, 2018 through August 31, 2023. This is not an administrative support position.

NOTE: This role will be granted the opportunity to work from home temporarily during the COVID-19 pandemic, with intent to return to an Emory University location in the future. Emory reserves the right to change this status with notice to the employee.
