The Division of Animal Resources at the Yerkes National Primate Research Center at Emory University is currently seeking a full time Animal Care Technician IV to join our dedicated Animal Care team located in Lawrenceville, GA to assist with husbandry and activities related to the daily operations of the NHP.  Observing all established guidelines for proper care and welfare of the animals, the ideal candidate will be motivated, dependable, detail-oriented, have a positive attitude and compassion for both animals and people.  This is an amazing opportunity to indirectly save and change lives and make a positive impact in the science and research community.


The Animal Care Technician IV will ensure the cleanliness of the facility and the maintenance of adequate supplies of food and bedding materials, including PPE. The Animal Care Technician IV will work together with other technicians according to a schedule prepared by the Animal Care Supervisors in consultation with the veterinary and colony management staff. The Animal Care Technician IV ensures the highest quality of laboratory animal care and research support, and has good communication skills with co-workers, the management team, PI’s, research staff, students, and other support services. This position reports directly to the Associate Operations Manager of the Field Station.  However, there is significant contact and interaction with the Animal Care Supervisors. This position is considered essential and requires some weekend and holiday work as part of a rotating schedule.



  • This position is a hybrid of animal care and veterinary technician and works with a high level of independence.
  • Participates in general and specialized animal care and feeding, and may administer medications and diets following veterinary protocol. May provide cage-wash duties.
  • Monitors and records health and physical condition of animals, may provide health observations and treatments under veterinary guidance.
  • Notifies professional personnel of conditions warranting attention. Monitors and records the condition and security of research animals (may include after hours).
  • May monitor the security and maintenance of facilities, grounds, vehicles, and equipment; follows the appropriate procedures for handling intruders, trespassers or unauthorized activities.
  • Observes the general condition of animal housing and notifies appropriate staff of the need for repairs or modifications.
  • May monitor temperature, light, humidity and water conditions to ensure a safe and comfortable environment.
  • May provide specialized services such as breeding management, aquatic care and management, research support and training of animal resources employees.
  • Employees in this classification may be required to work with, take specific precautions against and/or be immunized against potentially hazardous agents.
  • Performs related responsibilities as required.



  • A high school diploma or equivalent AND five years of animal husbandry/care experience,


  • Certification as Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (ALAT) AND four years of animal husbandry/care,


  • Six years of animal husbandry/care experience.


  • In positions involving breeding management, this position will require a Bachelor's degree and one year of experience working with laboratory animals.
  • Must have a working understanding of principles of animal breeding, genetics and behavior of one or more relevant species.
  • The ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
  • May require a valid Georgia driver's license and an insurable driving record.


  • Demonstrated outstanding working habits, including the ability to work independently and in a team environment
  • Excellent communications and decision-making skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in an animal research environment requiring continuous contact with animals
  • Demonstrated ability to understand established guidelines for humane care and welfare of laboratory animals as described by USDA and AAALAC
  • Working knowledge of sanitation practices, vivarium safety protocols, standard operating procedures, and basic animal husbandry
  • Certifications issued by the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS)
  • Experience working in a biosafety environment 
  • Demonstrated computer skills proficiency



  • Hours/Weekends/Holidays – 4:00 p.m. to 12:00 a.m., Monday through Friday, alternating Holidays.  The ability to cover additional shifts (weekdays and weekends) when necessary, for example when other night staff are on vacation.
  • This position has an indoor/outdoor work environment that may require working in inclement weather conditions.
  • This position also requires exposure to biohazards and potentially dangerous animals.
  • Work environment involves some exposure to hazards or physical risks, which require following basic safety precautions
  • Work is normally performed in a typical laboratory environment
  • Requires the ability to lift up to 50 lbs. as well as move/push heavy racks a short distance
  • Requires the ability to bend, kneel, and/or squat
