BACKGROUND NTD-SC:
Based at the Task Force for Global Health in Decatur, GA, and affiliated with Emory University, the
Neglected Tropical Diseases Support Center (NTD-SC) aims to optimize operational research to eliminate neglected tropical diseases which threaten the lives and well-being of millions of people in some of the world’s most marginalized communities. This work, conducted in close coordination with partners, addresses challenges facing each phase of the programs targeting the Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs): effectively scaling up to reach those at risk, successfully scaling down when their goals are reached, and finally sustaining the reductions achieved in disease prevalence. The NTD-SC serves as the secretariat for the Coalition for Operational Research on NTDs (COR-NTD), a global partnership focused on supporting this research agenda. The NTD-SC is actively pursuing an expanding portfolio focused on providing important services and support to the NTD community.

Description

The Associate Director, Communications & Events Management serves as a primary liaison to partners, directs communications with key partners, donors, research partners, large international agencies and corporations, and non-governmental organizations (NGOs). The Associate Director develops, promotes and coordinates the collaboration across researchers, national programs, the World Health Organization, and NGO partners to conduct operational research in support of the neglected tropical diseases (NTDs).

 

JOB DESCRIPTION:

  • Responsible for producing high-quality communications and development materials that position The Task Force for Global Health as a major global health and humanitarian organization that can positively affect large-scale health issues.
  • Regularly collaborates with director on strategic communications initiatives.
  • Directs the development of marketing, promotional, and communications strategies and policies to build awareness of program initiatives and priorities, and to serve various communications needs.
  • Provides leadership on communications projects for the NTD-Support Center and the Coalition for Operational Research on NTDs (COR-NTD), ensuring that communications reflect program commitments, strategic priorities, and quality requirements.
  • Develops engaging content for diverse channels including newsletters, websites, social media, blogs, and presentations.
  • Develops key messages informed by audience research and critical insights.
  • Translates technical content into lay language.
  • Develops pitches and place stories and op-eds for publication in high-value media outlets.
  • Identifies opportunities for increasing engagement with target audiences including donors and partners.
  • Identifies and manages communications needs of new projects on NTDs and other programmatic areas focusing on disease elimination. Develops proposals to engage new donors. Ensures alignment of all Task Force and NTD-SC communications with visual identity.
  • Supports director in development of executive correspondence, speeches, fact sheets, and other materials.
  • Leads or manages special projects in support of strategic goals, as assigned.
  • Supports efforts to increase institutional capacity for communications including identifying training opportunities, best practices, conferences, and workshops.
  • Leads and oversees the daily operations of the event management team, including the development and execution of appealing, original, outstanding, cost-effective and forward-thinking meetings, conferences, special events and programs. Conceives and implements special events in support of fundraising goals.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

 

SPECIFIC COMMUNICATIONS RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:

  • Regularly collaborates with the Deputy Director and Program Director on strategic communications initiatives
  • Develops engaging content for diverse channels including newsletters, websites, social media, blogs and presentations
  • Develops proposals, plans and places stories in research focused media outlets.
  • Identifies and manages communications needs of new projects, NTDs and other programmatic areas
  • Ensures alignment of communications for NTD-SC programs and Task Force for various audiences as applicable
  • Supports NTD-SC leaders in development of correspondence, speeches, fact sheets, and other materials
  • Leads or manages special projects in support of strategic goals
  • Develops strong networks within the NTD community for disseminating NTD related content
  • Leads and creates the strategic vision of the NTD and COR-NTD website, including liaising with the website developer as needed
  • Represents NTD-SC/ Task Force at conferences and/or meetings
  • Works with the NTD community to keep Operational Research study entries current within ConnectOR repository
  • Serves as a trusted resource within the NTD community through communications efforts

MEETING AND EVENTS PLANNING

  • Develops new meetings, conferences, special events, and programs while enhancing delivery and execution of existing programs.
  • Establishes broader goals and objectives within events management
  • Fosters community and collaboration through engaging, thoughtful program-wide events and programming.
  • Manages COR NTD content to ensure meeting is well balanced across disease areas and suitable technical content
  • Promotes the brand identity for COR-NTD, provides clarity around its mission and NTD-SC's role as Secretariat
  • Generates new components for the COR-NTD meeting as needed
  • Manages the topics, content, presentations and edits blog
  • Leads content coordination for COR-NTD, including the acquisition of new partners across novel topics
  • Handles grant writing and editing of proposals for new donor funding

 

OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Participates fully as a member of The Task Force for Global Health by contributing, assisting, and participating in projects, activities, and initiatives as requested by management.

TRAVEL: Up to 15% domestic and international

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree in field related to specific program as indicated

AND

  • Six years’ program related experience, or equivalent combination of experience, education, and training.

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master’s degree in communications or related field
  • At least 6-8 years of nonprofit communications experience, including at least 3 years of public health and/or global health experience
  • Able to communicate to diverse audiences including technical and non-technical
  • Demonstrated skill in translating complex public health or medical topics into compelling narratives for diverse audiences
  • Strong command of traditional and digital communications channels
  • Knowledge of visual communications design
  • Exceptional written and oral communications skills
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills, able to interface with staff at all levels, donors, partners, and the media
  • Experience supervising and mentoring junior staff
  • Passion and commitment to addressing the health needs of the world’s poor or other social justice causes
  • Ability to work collaboratively with people of diverse skills, cultures, and backgrounds
  • High level of diplomacy and experience interacting effectively with senior staff

 

NOTE: This role will be granted the opportunity to work from home temporarily during the COVID-19 pandemic, with intent to return to an Emory University location in the future.  Emory reserves the right to change this status with notice to employee.
