  • Under general supervision, monitors, controls, inspects, contains or removes hazardous material (biological, chemical, radioactive or other).
  • Provides support to ensure compliance with applicable standards, laws and regulations.
  • Performs surveys and routine safety inspections in the areas of biosafety, chemical safety, radiation safety or industrial hygiene.
  • May participate in project management to facilitate laboratory moves and abatement projects, including coordination with vendors, contractors and internal clients.
  • Maintains storage areas, equipment, and personal protective equipment related to EHS programs.
  • Participates in training for program areas.
  • Responds to internal clients regarding chemical, biosafety, radiation safety and industrial hygiene concerns.
  • Maintains records and prepares reports.
  • Responds to emergency situations involving hazardous materials.
  • Performs related responsibilities as required.


  • Bachelors plus 3 years experience in environmental engineering, public health, occupational health and safety or other appropriate science-related field of study (i.e. chemistry) is required.
  • Professional Board Certification desired:  (Examples include: CHMM (Certified Hazardous Materials Manager), PE (Professional Engineer), CIH (Certified Industrial Hygienist), Certified Health Physicist (CHP) or CSP (Certified Safety Professional), BSP (Biosafety Professional).
  • Equivalent combination of experience, education and training is accepted.

  • The Emory University Environmental Health and Safety Office (EHSO) provides environmental, health, and safety services to all aspects of Emory operations to provide a healthy working environment for research, teaching, healthcare, and facilities.
  • EHSO engages the Emory community in managing environmental, health, and safety risks, reducing workplace injuries and illnesses, and reducing environmental impact by delivering professional value-added services and solutions that aid and assist the community. 
  • Research Safety has a focus in the evaluation of research specific hazards and development of programs to control risk while collaborating with the community to facilitate research. 
  • The Research Safety Professional II works under the guidance of the Director of Research Safety. 
Position Specific Duties and Responsibilities:
• Identify hazards in the work environmental, assess risks, identify risk mitigation, and work to improve daily safety performance in the research laboratory environment.
• Conduct laboratory health and safety audits in both research and teaching laboratories.
• Perform incident investigations and collaborate with laboratory personnel and departments to mitigate EHS. 
• Perform job hazard and/or procedural assessments, such as reviewing Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
• Evaluate engineering controls to ensure proper function and other safety equipment such as ventilation controls, autoclaves, emergency eyewash and showers.
• Develop and deliver research safety training programs. Provide specific mentoring to laboratory personnel. 
• Communicate recommendations (verbal and written) for improvement to the laboratorians regarding health and safety and monitor as necessary.
• Model appropriate laboratory behavior including the use of personal protective equipment (PPE); demonstrate expertise in EHS performance and promote hazard recognition, risk assessment, hazard mitigation, emergency preparedness, and daily implementation of safe and healthy practices.
• Conduct trend analysis to identify and minimize risk. Exercise judgment within defined policies and/or parameters in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions.
• Serve as a member of the EHSO spill response team, which includes response on weekends and after regular business hours on a rotating schedule. This requires the ability to obtain medical clearance for use of personal protective equipment included respiratory protection.  
• Communicate and interpret federal, state, and local regulations accurately and effectively.
Preferred Qualifications:
• Familiarity with applicable laboratory regulations and guidelines, including but not limited to: OSHA, CDC, EPA as well as NIH guidelines and other standards. 
• Strong interpersonal, analytical and problem-solving skills with attention to detail, and the ability to navigate a complex work environment. 
• Ability to communicate complex technical issues to diverse stakeholders.
• Master’s level degree in Environmental Science, Chemistry, Biology, Physics, Engineering, Public Health or related laboratory science field of study.
• Research laboratory, research safety, and/or research animal handling experience desired.
• Professional Board Certification desired or eligibility for certification: (Examples include: CHMM (Certified Hazardous Materials Manager), PE (Professional Engineer), CIH (Certified Industrial Hygienist), Certified Health Physicist (CHP) or CSP (Certified Safety Professional), BSP (Biosafety Professional).
