  • As part of the Environmental Health and Safety Office (EHSO), manages the establishment of Biological Safety Level 3 (BSL3) and Animal Biosafety Level 3 (ABSL3) laboratories on the Emory University campus.
  • Implements safety, security, and standard operating procedures and of these facilities.
  • Provides operational and budgetary oversight, as well as maintains compliance for high containment facilities.
  • In conjunction with the Emory Biological Safety Officer, serves as a liaison with Principal Investigators, laboratory staff, Campus Services, School of Medicine facility manager(s), and external regulatory agencies (such as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention).
  • Maintains safe day-to-day operations of the assigned high containment laboratory facility including, but not limited to, training new users, compliance monitoring, coordinating research activities of multiple laboratories, and resource scheduling.
  • Establishes and maintains facility-specific biosafety, biosecurity manuals, and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
  • Ensures required routine safety check(s) are fully compliant with relevant SOPs.
  • Trains and instructs research staff that will be utilizing ABSL3/BSL3 facilities.
  • Monitors daily activities of high containment laboratories, as well as the project management goals of each facility.
  • Utilizes effective project and resource management needed for successful operation and service.
  • Interacts with various Principle Investigators (PI) and research leaders.
  • Develops and participates in emergency drills and tabletop exercises.
  • Helps coordinate proper emergency response procedures for the BSL3 facility.
  • Sources and maintains an inventory of required safety supplies and laboratory equipment to ensure full compliance with Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and meet end user research needs.
  • Coordinates laboratory and equipment decontamination and maintenance with Emory Campus Services and external vendors.
  • Provides routine communication with core support teams and other high containment stakeholders.
  • Participates in cost model development, use projections and budgeting.
  • Coordinates incoming/outgoing material transfers with the Environmental Health and Safety Office - Research Safety, Office of Research Administration leadership, and Office of Export Control to ensure full compliance with all local, state, and federal regulations.
  • Coordinates proper maintenance and verification testing of critical containment equipment and facilities with appropriate documentation and record keeping; documents annual BSL3 re-verification efforts.
  • Coordinates risk assessment related activities with the Biological Safety Officer.
  • Coordinates high containment laboratory incident/injury investigations.
  • Prepares use reports and CDC compliance documents for the Biological Safety Officer and the Institutional Biosafety Committee, as needed.
  • Serves on the Institutional Biosafety Committee and as a liaison to the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee.
  • Performs related responsibilities as required.


  • Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Animal Science or a related field and six years of related lab research analysis or related experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
  • Biological safety credential (RBP, CBSP) preferred.
  • Previous experience working in BSL3/ABSL3 laboratories strongly preferred.
  • Strong background in biosafety; previous BSL3 compliance monitoring, supply chain and logistics management, and laboratory assay development and validation experience.
  • Proficient in technical writing and safety training development and delivery.
  • Working knowledge of Select Agent regulations (CFR 42/Chapter I/Subchapter F/ Part 73).
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work with information systems, automated and technical equipment.
  • Work is in a high containment laboratory that contains hazardous biological agents and animals potentially infected with hazardous biological agents.
