“The Carter Center is a 501(c)(3), not-for-profit, nongovernmental organization founded in 1982 in Atlanta, GA, by former U.S. President Jimmy Carter and his wife, Rosalynn, in partnership with Emory University. The Center has helped to improve millions of lives in more than 80 countries by waging peace, fighting disease, and building hope. It has monitored 113 elections in 39 countries, helping to ensure democratic elections that reflect the will of the people. When the Center first started observing elections in the late 1980s, the Cold War was ending and a wave of democratization was spreading globally. In the last 10 years, however, the trend toward greater democracy has plateaued, and citizens in many parts of the globe are now confronting challenges from authoritarian governments and narrowing political space.     Beyond elections, the Center seeks to deepen democracy by nurturing full citizen participation in public policy-making and by helping to establish government institutions that bolster the rule of law, fair administration of justice, access to information, and government transparency.    A culture of respect for human rights is crucial to permanent peace. The Center supports the efforts of human rights activists at the grass roots, while also working to advance national and international human rights laws that uphold the dignity and worth of each individual.    When democracy backslides or formal diplomacy fails, the Center offers conflict resolution expertise and has furthered avenues for peace in Africa, the Middle East, Latin America, and Asia.    Since 1982, The Carter Center has shown that creating a world at peace is a very possible journey, one step at a time.    SUMMARY:   The Data Analyst provides support for data management, analysis, and visualization forConflict Resolution Program(CRP) projects. We are seeking a highly motivated candidate to join our team as a Lead Research Specialist in Dr. Maier's laboratory, within the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, Center for Transfusion and Cellular Therapies. The Maier lab is focused on the intersection of immunology with hemostasis, whether that be mitigating alloresponses to transfused blood products or understanding thrombosis in diseases like COVID-19.    Dr. Maier’s research focuses on the intersection of immunology with hemostasis. Specifically, trying to understand why some patients develop a condition called platelet refractoriness (PR), rapidly clearing transfused donor platelets and preventing the desired therapeutic outcome. Oftentimes this is the result of antibody-mediated platelet clearance; however, Dr. Maier has been studying an antibody-independent mechanism of clearance mediated by CD8 T cells. Understanding the interactions between recipient CD8 T cells and transfused donor platelets may reveal new therapeutic strategies to inhibit platelet loss in patients requiring transfusion. In addition, amid the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr. Maier has been studying coagulopathy in patients with SARS-CoV-2 infection. Patients with COVID-19 have an increased risk of clotting, which may be related to blood hyperviscosity (stickiness) and hyperfibrinogenemia.  Dr. Maier is currently investigating the mechanisms of COVID-19 hypercoagulability and novel treatment strategies, and is leading a randomized controlled trial on the role of therapeutic plasma exchange in COVID-19 disease management.    The ideal candidate will not shy away from helping to build a brand new lab, nor the opportunity for truly translational work with the potential to impact patients in real-time. Prior experience with cellular and molecular techniques, especially flow cytometry, and/or mouse-work would be helpful but is not required.    JOB DESCRIPTION: - Under minimal supervision, performs a variety of specialized and complex research and laboratory tests and procedures. - Uses independent judgment in applying or adapting scientific techniques. May assist in protocol design. - Investigates and proposes alternative experimental procedures for consideration by a principal investigator. - Assists in planning and scheduling research procedures. - Analyzes and interprets results of studies. - Demonstrates and trains others in the proper use/operation of laboratory techniques and equipment. - Calibrates, troubleshoots and performs routine repair and maintenance of equipment. - Reviews literature for related research developments and techniques and compiles findings. - Monitors laboratory processes to maintain quality assurance standards. Records results of studies, compiles and analyzes data and prepares charts and graphs. - Monitors the handling, storage and disposal of hazardous substances. - Performs related responsibilities as required. - Employees in this classification may be required to work with, take specific precautions against and/or be immunized against potentially hazardous agents.  MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: - Bachelor's degree in a scientific field and two years of research experience, or equivalent combination of experience, education, and training.   NOTE: Position tasks are generally required to be performed in-person at an Emory University location.  Remote work from home day options may be granted at department discretion. Emory reserves the right to change remote work status with notice to employee.
